What is Search Engine Optimisation?

Search Engine Optimisation, or SEO, defies easy definition. But here's a short version:

Search Engine Optimisation
Using keyword analysis, good coding practices, well-written copy, link popularity analysis and careful site organisation to move a web page as close to the number one search results position as possible for a given key phrase, in both search engines and directories.

SEO is the process in which your website undergoes development or redevelopment to properly and best communicate your keywords to search engines. There is no sure-shot, short-cut way of getting into the top 10 results of the major search engines but you can increase the chances. Search engines rank websites based on two major factors: unique content with pertinent keywords in the body, and link popularity - the number of quality incoming links your website has. Other important algorithms that determine your ranking with search engines are the architecture of the site, visibility of your content, underlying code and how natural your site appears to the engines.

The majority of web users start with a search engine to find what they want therefore a top priority for website owners should be to get top rankings on search engines and directories. Websites that are optimised for search engines have higher rankings in search results, thus driving more traffic to the site. While other firms stop at the design and programming of your site, Funky :: Software include on-page search engine optimisation to ensure that your site will be in the rankings of many popular search engines, including Google, Yahoo!, and MSN. As with all the sites we design, we stress the importance of SEO compatibility. SEO is essential for all websites, which is why we include it with all our sites built from the bottom up.

Keyword Analysis

If you your website source code is clean and follows the W3C recommendations, half of your battle is already won. We will check the current status of your website to ensure that the optimisation process will not be encumbered by any unforeseen problems of function. Then, using manual searches as well as custom research software, we will take the gathered data and create a list of the most highly trafficked and targeted words in your industry - and consult with you to choose the final keywords.

Content Creation

After a list of keywords has been generated for your website, we will work with you to create a unique content. Your relevant content is your key to the higher rankings. The search engines simply love well-written relevant content because that’s what they want to present to their users. The more content you have, the more convinced the search engines become of your expertise. The search engines love websites that contain less code and more content. Together, we will ensure that your copy utilises the keywords in accordance with the right densities and marketing of your site whilst ensuring that the essence of your website is not compromised.

Website Redevelopment

If the SEO work is started after the website has been built, up to 70% of the work has to be done again. All aspects of a website, including its architecture, meta tags, alt tags, graphic-text, internal link structure and sub-pages may require modifying to be spider friendly and best meet search engine algorithms. Funky :: Software can redevelop your site to optimally communicate your keywords with search engines. Moreover, we are dedicated to maintaining the design integrity and essence of your website.

Link Development

One of the major variables in attaining high rankings is developing incoming links from other highly ranked websites that are well established and have commonality with your website. It is important that these websites are not of spurious nature because you can get penalised for, although inadvertently, wrong associations. The truth is that many SEOs that promise thousands of links in several days get these links by buying links. According to GoogleBuying or selling links that pass PageRank is in violation of Google’s webmaster guidelines and can negatively impact a site’s ranking in search results.”

Search Engine Submission

Search Engines will not know that your website is there unless it either has a link to it from another website that the Search Engines know, or if it hasn't been submitted to any Search Engines. So, after the optimisation process is complete, Funky :: Software will submit your website to all the major search engines and directories, including Yahoo, AltaVista, HotBot, AllTheWeb, Google, AOL, iWon, HotBot and Netscape, MSN, Lycos, Teoma, AskJeeves and DMOZ (Open Directory). We will also create and submit site maps to both Google and Yahoo via their respective programs.

Remember

Search engine optimisation can take time. Even Google only refreshes its entire index once a month, so don't expect instant results.

If your first registration run doesn't generate increased rankings within a month or two, don't panic. Look at your site traffic and search on the keywords you chose. Make sure that the search engine you're checking actually includes your site, too - it may just be that the bots just haven't got around to 'crawling' your site.
